The name Yu-Gi-Oh comes from Japanese, yûgiô, yuugiou in Romaji, Japanese word for the "King of Games. The game involves characters who play a card game called "Duel Monsters. Our hero, Yu-Gi-Oh, is a champion card-gamer and international star. The show takes place in an alternate universe where people who excel at card games are given fame and prestige. Yu-Gi-Oh has magical help to win card games. He's possessed by the spirit of an ancient Egyptian Pharaoh while he plays. The card game is the modern-day continuation of the mystical "Shadow Games," which involved spooky dueling monsters. These games are confined to virtual dueling arenas, where Yu-Gi-Oh /Pharaoh often squares off against Seto Kaiba, a billionaire who squanders his vast fortune trying to beat our hero.
